Leadership

Student leadership is rapidly expanding at the school and its impact is tangible.

Students who become part of the Student Council are involved in the running of the school and their contributions make a difference. They have led major decision making processes in the school, such as the selection of our catering provider, Olive Dining; supported with recruitment of new staff; shared ideas for our new school build and much more. Our Peer Mentors are trained to support younger students in their studies and as they transition into secondary school. They provide exceptional support to their peers, whilst at the same time developing their own leadership and communication skills.

Find out more below.

Student Council

Our Student Council is a group of elected student representatives who work together to make an impact within the school. They are the voice of the students in school. They discuss school-wide issues, plan events, help make important decisions and feedback to school leaders to influence change.

Student Councils work to:

  1. PROMOTE CITIZENSHIP
  2. PROMOTE SCHOLARSHIP
  3. PROMOTE LEADERSHIP
  4. PROMOTE CULTURAL VALUES

How do students become part of the student council?

Students who are interested in helping others in the community and wish to make the school a better place would be wonderful candidates to take part in the student council as representatives! Students who are interested must:

  • be a good role model
  • demonstrate leadership qualities
  • maintain good attendance & punctuality
  • maintain and promote the school values of Pride, Respect & Courage

There is a two stage application process annually in order to elect the Student Council:

Stage 1: Application form

Students must fill out an application form that will be used to determine eligibility for the role.

Stage 2: Presentation

Students give a formal presentation to their tutor group explaining why they will be an excellent candidate. Tutor groups will then vote for their representatives.

Expanding header: PRIDE Committee

We teach students to be proud of their work at our school by promoting common PRIDE standards across all key stages and departments. These standards are displayed in every classroom and around the school building. Students in the PRIDE committee help staff to monitor these standards. They take part in Learning Walks, visiting classrooms to look at students’ books and feeding back their findings to students and senior staff.

School Environment Committee

We take great care with the school environment. We use PRIDE standards across common spaces in our school to ensure the school environment reflects our core values. Our school environment committee, a part of the student council, supports with this by regularly visiting rooms and checking that the PRIDE standards are being met. In doing this, the school environment committee help us improve the quality of our school learning environment.

Staff Recruitment Committee

We value our students’ input into the important decisions we make about members of staff who join our staff team. Each time we recruit a new member of staff, we involve our students in two ways. Members of our staff recruitment committee take prospective candidates on a tour of the school, answering any questions they may have and making sure that candidates see the school in action. In addition, each candidate is interviewed by a panel of students from the Staff recruitment committee. Their feedback is part of the final selection process – and there are rarely any disagreements from staff involved about our students’ recommendations!

Reading Buddies

We place a strong emphasis on the importance of reading our school. Students have a reading lesson based in our library each week during Years 7, 8 and 9. We use a programme called ‘Accelerated Reader’ to help us make sure that this time is used well by students to improve and develop skills in reading.

Reading Buddies provide additional support to our Year 7 students. We provide high quality training for reading buddies, led by our partners, the National Literacy Trust. Once trained, Reading Buddies meet with students weekly to listen to them read and to discuss the books which they enjoy. Through sharing their love of reading with their peers, our Reading Buddies are inspiring role models for our younger learners.
